How to Boost Windows XP Download Speed on Any XP PC

Got Windows XP? Is it painfully slow at downloading any file or website? There's actually a little-known solution to this problem which even a beginner can use. This tutorial will show you how to boost XP download speed and make your Internet seem to run a lot faster.
Unfortunately for the millions of people who still use Windows XP, there's a small problem inside this system which continually limits the download speed of your PC. This problem is an issue which affects all Windows XP machines, and is where it has a setting inside the system which limits the speed of the downloads to your PC.
The problem is that since XP was created in a time when dial-up connections were still popular, Microsoft figured that they should limit the speed of downloads that their XP system could handle. When you download anything on your PC, it's basically taking the file from a remote computer and putting it on your PC. If XP somehow tried to download this file too quickly, it would end up ruining your PC and the one on the Internet.
Inside the 'registry' of Windows, there's actually a setting which controls the rate that your XP PC can download at. To fix this setting, you need to go into the 'registry' and fix the setting that is inside there. This is okay to do now that many people have a high-speed broadband connection, making hte limit on download speed irrelevant.
To boost the download potential of your PC, you should first download a 'registry cleaner'. These are software programs which clean through the settings of your PC and remove any of the ones that your computer does not need any more. You should install one of these tools and let it scan through Windows. It will find all the settings that are limiting the download speed of XP and will remove them, boosting the speed of your downloads instantly.
You can boost download speed on XP by using a 'registry cleaner' to remove all the errors that are making it download slow. You can Click Here to speed up XP download speed.

Replacing Your Old Drafty Wood Windows

In many older homes, the windows still have the old style sash weights and pulleys and are single pane glass units. Not only are these type windows inefficient against heat loss, most are glazed with glazing putty that has cracked and dried from age and is most likely missing. Take a good look at the your windows and check the sash weight cords to see if they are broken as well. Missing or badly frayed sash ropes can be dangerous as it makes the window difficult to open and close and by using a prop stick to hold the window up in warm weather, you are inviting an accident when someone accidentally knocks out the stick and the window comes crashing down on tiny fingers perhaps or even worse a neck! If your survey shows the windows to indeed be old style single pane windows it is time to replace them with new thermally efficient and much easier to operate units. Replacement windows come in all shapes and styles today. Most commonly seen are white or brown vinyl types as these are also the cheapest to buy. Many manufacturers will make custom colored units for your project. All brands are not the same however. The cheapest units feature one piece vinyl extrusion frames that will allow the exterior cold to transmit directly through the frame materials and emit cold into to the inside of your home. The inside of the frame is about the same temperature as outside. Brrrrrr. A better quality window will have what is called a "thermal break" located approximately halfway through the frame made of insulating material that will stop the cold at that point. Much better idea. Glass types. Again there are many choices. Insulating glass which consists of two panes of glass with an inert gas in between is far better than single pane windows anytime. A step up, is when the inside of the glass is coated with what is called a "low E" coating. This lets the suns heat radiate into the home but won't let it go back out. It is a few dollars more but with today's energy costs for heating fuels, it is well worth it. Down side? Most vinyl windows are manufactured only in white or brown colors. Some companies produce custom colored vinyl but again these are more money. A second type of replacement window is made with a vinyl clad exterior and an exposed wooden interior. This provides a maintenance free outside that you do not have to paint and allows painted interior side that you can match the color or perhaps stain, to match the decor of your room. Some companies produce these types in colored exteriors as well and I have seen red, green, blue but remember the windows will be there for a very long time! You cannot change the outside color once they are installed. Lastly, there are all wood replacement windows available but with all the other options, unless you love to paint outside on a ladder they are not the best choice. An exception would be a historic restoration where matching the window style is critical. Even wood windows come today with thermal breaks and low-E glass. Vinyl replacement windows fit right into your existing window openings. Another great advantage to replacement windows is the window sashs tilt inside for easy cleaning. No more hanging out windows or balancing on ladders. Most windows have two slide type locks on the top of each sash and by simply sliding the sash up a few inches and pushing on the locks, a slight tug on the sash top, tips it into the room for cleaning. When done, simply push the sash back into it's track. HINT: When cleaning these windows, pull and tip the lower sash inside first but clean the top window first and replace it into it's frame. This helps prevent dripping your cleaner on the bottom window. All vinyl windows I have found so far also feature a pull out tab lock on the upper sash on each side to prevent the lower sash from being lifted more than a few inches when the tabs are in the open position. Their use is twofold. Windows can be left open a few inches for ventilation without worrying about someone getting in from the outside. Of course if they really want in, they will simply break the glass. These tabs are not burglar proof. The second and more important reason for the tabs to me, is to allow you to leave the window open for ventilation but small children cannot climb out the window and suffer a nasty fall. All windows also come with one or two sash locks for home protection. Depending on the width of your window, the manufacturer decides how many locks the sash requires for the best protection. Lastly, many windows also feature an adjustment screw that allows you to stiffen the amount of pull the window requires to slide it up and down. The window is adjusted in the factory and seldom needs further adjustments.

How to Clean a Corrupted Windows Registry

A computer free of errors runs smoothly, with the probability of crashing dramatically lowered.  However, over time and continuous use, it develops errors, especially after a number of run-ins with malicious software, like virtses and spy ware.  The computer may end up having a corrupted Windows registry, which leads to the dreaded computer crash.  By cleaning up the registry, you can protect your files and ultimately, your computer.
Back Up Your Files
Before cleaning the computer's registry, see to it that you have backed up your files.  An error in cleaning could easily wipe out your files.  Save your computer's contents on a different drive and/or on an external hard drive.  That way, you can still recover your files, even if you screw up the registry cleaning process.  After backing up your files, close all active programs, since they can interfere with the cleaning.
Registry Cleaning Software
Cleaning the registry, manually is quite tedious, which is why many people rely on registry cleaning software.  These programs are available on computer software stores or can be downloaded through download sites like http://www.download.com or through Bit Torrent.  Do some research on the product before downloading, since some of them may not be as efficient as advertised.  Once you have one installed, just follow as directed by the program.  In an hour or two, your computer should be running smoothly.
Manual Cleaning
In some cases, the computer won't open up Windows, which renders some registry cleaning programs useless.  You have no other choice but clean the registry, manually.  Here's how:
1.    Slip the Windows XP CD in your CD drive then reboot the computer.
2.    Press "R" when the option appears, opening up the Recovery Console.
3.    Choose your preferred means of installing Windows, then supply the administrator password, if your computer was assigned one.  You'll then be taken to the command prompt, which comes as a black screen with a blinking cursor.
4.    Enter the following data:
md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak
delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default
5.    Type "exit" after.
6.    When your computer is booting up, press F8 then choose Safe Mode.
7.     Log in as the administrator then activate System Restore (Start - Search - Search for System Restore).
8.    Set a restore point, so your current settings are saved.
9.    Copy the following files to C:\Windows\Tmp:
 _REGISTRY_USER_.DEFAULT
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM
10.    Once done, rename the files you just inputted, based on the last word of their file names. For example, _REGISTRY_USER_.DEFAULT should be renamed to DEFAULT and so forth.
11.    Repeat steps 2 and 3.
12.    Enter the following commands on the command prompt:
 del c:\windows\system32\config\sam
del c:\windows\system32\config\security
del c:\windows\system32\config\software
del c:\windows\system32\config\default
del c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\tmp\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\tmp\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\tmp\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\tmp\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\tmp\default c:\windows\system32\config\default
13.    Repeat step 5.
14.    Once your computer boots up, repeat steps 7 and 8.
Cleaning windows, as you can see, is quite tedious.  If you're not adept at navigating and tweaking Windows, you might as well have a programmer or a computer technician perform the task.  You won't pay much, since the job is elementary for them anyway.

Download Windows Registry Cleaner Software For The Best Performance Of PC

Does your PC crash? Is your PC running slow? Do you have error messages popping up? Do you have programs that you just can't get off your computer?
If you answer is YES to any of these questions, you need to take serious steps to prevent the pathetic situation. I've recently installed a program on my PC, decided I didn't want it, and uninstalled it. But there are still bits and pieces of it all over my computer. Thus the performance of PC got adversely affected. This kind of situation happens to everyone of us.
You could have brought a brand new PC so that you could enjoy the benefits of a fast, easy machine that would make your life easier, comfortable and more enjoyable. Unfortunately, after continual use, all PC's suffer the effects of a corrupt and ineffective Windows registry, causing error messages to appear, slow loading, and system crashes. Eventually, that machine that was supposed to make your life easier is now the source of your greatest frustration.
Truly it's not your fault. Over the time with regular use computers tend to lose their performance. This is due to registry errors, spyware and adware, especially if you have a regular internet access. If you are trying to remove them manually it's either hard to get rid of or never uninstall completely, leaving unused entries in your Windows registry which slows down the performance of the PC.
The technical reason for the registry errors is as follows: Computers perform at the best when they receive a regular and professional maintenance. The installation and un-installation of software, hardware, and drivers often leave remnants behind in your registry, resulting in a tangle of unused applications, broken drivers, and incomplete and empty command signals. This ultimately slows down your PC and if not addressed promptly can lead to serious problems such as computer freezing, programs not responding, and system crashes.
The Windows Registry is a massive database representing your PC's unique configuration. Windows Registry is the component that governs the operation of Windows. Whenever you make a change to the Control Panel settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in the registry. Without a clean and well organized registry, your Windows operating system is vulnerable to corruption, freezing, and crashing. Taking preventative measures will ensure the optimal performance of the PC. It's very simple to fix the registry problems with just a few clicks.
You can notice that the larger your Windows Registry, the longer the OS will take to boot. When the Windows registry becomes very large, the PC's performance can also decrease. Only a well versed technically sound person can manually edit the registry. In fact it's very risky to do that. Most computer users find this task sensitive and time consuming and those who are not advanced computer experts run the risk of permanently damaging their system by trying to fix their windows registry manually.
In order to clean your computer correctly and thoroughly, a comprehensive analysis of your registry is necessary. Using the Registry Cleaner Software is the most highly developed method in fixing the problems of windows registry. While there are a number of registry repair applications available, few offer a comprehensive set of features that enable you to completely clean your registry safely. It is very crucial that you choose a Windows registry cleaner software that you can trust.
A Registry Cleaner scans all types of problems such as invalid paths, file types, CLSID's DLL's Sound files, Fonts, extensions and class keys. The registry cleaner will have these features in a place where they are easy to access and well organized. The registry cleaner will be easy to use.
The unique advantage of using a windows registry cleaner software is its : 1)ability to provide your computer a free scan before purchasing, 2)ability to backup current registry and set a restore point before any change is made to the registry, and 3) a Windows startup manager. Moreover it's user-friendly software and does not require complicated steps to setup and use.
Regular registry cleaning is very necessary. Without the registry cleaner, your PC is definitely going to crash attracting a very high bill from the technician not to mention the data that could be lost which could be your life changing information.

Window Shades Can Instantly Give Your Home A Easy Way To Control Light And Privacy

Window shades can instantly give your home an easy way to control light and privacy and still Create A Beautiful Window Treatment
A window treatment shade in its basic terms is a spring cord pulley system that allows you to raise and lower a window covering shade. There are a wide variety of different types that you can choose from like roller shades to cellular shades to natural shades like bamboo or other natural fibers. With so many different styles and combinations you might have to do a little research on your options and know what your specific needs are for a window shade. The first to start with is how much light control and home privacy are you trying to achieve, decide whether you're trying to control nighttime privacy or daylight heat and glare or maybe you need a combination of the two. To have the best of both worlds you can start with a light filtering shade for protection against the sun and in the evening you could add curtains or some draperies that will give you the privacy. Two shade options like pleated shades and roller shades can give you the option of being installed from bottom up giving you privacy during the day and allow the sun to shine through the top. If your window shade is going to be used quite often then you should make sure you have a pulley or operating system that is easy to use.
Discover a shade style that works for you
You can find a numerous amount of shade styles and colors from window covering manufacturers. These window shades start from being a very distinctive character style and then you will find some that can blend in perfectly depending on the trimming or the fabric of the window shade treatment. An example: an appearance of a contemporary look would be with the use of a pleated shade or either as cellular shade, reason for this is because of the fabric that is gathered on the bottom of the shade. If you're trying to create a softer look and appeal you may consider the cloud or the balloon shade, remember that there is a big impact with colors on your window treatments. By using geo-metrics and solids you will create a new tailored look and style than if you were to choose to use florals and lace fabric for the window shade treatment.
Which mounting style will work for your window shade?
All shade styles can be designed to be mounted on the inside of the window frame or either the outside of the window frame. With this in mind you'll be able to decide on the overall appeal that you are trying to accomplish, depending if it's for decoration or you need a shade that is very practical. When you use the inside mounting shade a top window treatment should be used like a swag or a valance. If you would like more control on the window you could add a curtain or a heavier drapery to it. Another appeal of this style of window shade is it allows you to show off the workmanship of the window frame, or you might not have the space around the window for the outside hanging shade and operating mechanism. From the basic design appeal the shade that is on the inside will allow the frame to encompass your window treatment allowing you to have a more visual emphasis. Using the outside window shade you will get the complete opposite look and feel. This shade style works well if you are trying to conceal the frame of the window or even make it look bigger than it is. This shading option will also have the ability to camouflage an oversize window and allow you to have more of a decorative shade look and appeal to an otherwise boring window.
Add to your window shade with a hem design
If you are looking to add a personal touch to the window treatment then the hem is the easiest way to accomplish this. The hems on the shades can be very intricate to very basic and plain depending on your plans for the overall window design. The downside of this idea is that not all window shades will give you the opportunity to add a hem in the design. Example: Cellular shades and Pleated shades don't blend in and don't benefit from a hem in the design, Roller shades on the other hand work well with a hem and are usually a perfect canvas to start your window shade design. Hems have a few different types and styles that you can add like scalloped, notched, Geo metric or even a curved hem. Edge treatments like this can also copy a pattern or style that you may have somewhere else in your room.
Trims that are decorative are: lace edgings, cording, a fringe, ruffles, Rick rack or even ribbon. By using different styles of hems on your window you can really add some nice finishing touches to the window treatment. These hems work well with any cord mechanisms like cloud or Balloon shades or Austrian window shades. If your window shade incorporates a tie back such as used in the rollup shade than your best hem choice would be a plain one because an embellished one would hinder the shades operation.
Here are six main groups of window shades
Window shades will fall into six different groups. Light blocking ability will depend on the shades material it's made of. If you have a plain or lightweight window shade you can always add a liner to help control the light. Always make sure you choose the right window shade for your needs.
·Festoon shades: This style of shade will give you a more soft decorative feminine feel. Festoon shades are shade design to be stationary but you do have the option of making them operable or adjustable.
·Roman shades: Flat and very streamlined with horizontal plates that are 4 to 6 inches deep. Adding a liner to the Roman Shade works well or depending on the look and style you can stay with the single layer of fabric.
·Cellular shades: Looks like an accordion because of the pleated fabric layers. The layers are joined back to back giving you an air pocket between the fabric, which gives you great window insulation and good UV protection.
·Roller shades: Comes in a variety of different materials like plain fabric, vinyl, or textured to give more character. This spring operated shade is the basic and simplest which makes it a very attractive option.
·Pleated shades: Being made with folded fabric or paper, this shade will stack when pulled and tucked nicely under any window treatment like a curtain or drapery and be virtually invisible. Pleated shades have the option of a double cord system allowing you to lower from the top.
·Woven wood shades: This is a natural shade made with grasses, matchsticks, bamboo, Hemp or any material deemed natural. They are controlled with rollers or cords. Light control depends on the type of weave of the material.

Replacing Casement Windows in Older Homes is a Good Investment

Casement windows are a traditional type of window frequently found in older homes. These windows, instead of sliding open and closed, are more like little doors with glass panes: They are hinged and swing open and closed, just like a door. Although most casement windows simply swing inward in order to open them, some are opened outward by turning a crank on the inside, just below the window.
In older homes, casement windows are often the dominant type of window. For instance, many homes in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s favored the crank style of window. In decades before that, casement windows with wooden frames were common; for example, small, decorative casement windows were often placed on either side of a fireplace or mantle.
Unfortunately, as many homeowners find when they go to replace the windows in an older home, casement windows in older homes are usually odd sizes or shapes. Since most windows these days come in a few standard sizes, this usually means that in order to get an exact replacement, you will need to order custom windows.
You do have a few options when replacing the casement windows in an older house. Depending on the size of the original window, you might choose to replace it with a different style of window, such as a double hung, or perhaps even a window that does not open at all. A different style of window does make it easier to install screens or a window unit air conditioner, for example. It is important to bear in mind, however, that changing the size of a window is a more involved undertaking, and will require some structural work and remodeling, rather than simply replacing the window unit.
Despite these considerations, replacing the casement windows in your home can have some real advantages. For starters, windows in older homes are usually only single paned. Additionally, old wooden frames are usually warped and tend to have sizeable gaps in them, and many newer frames are made of aluminum, which conducts heat, essentially taking it out of your home. This combination of factors makes the windows in older homes quite inefficient at maintaining a temperature, and can therefore cost you a lot in heating and cooling bills.
For the most part, modern windows are double paned, which means they have two panes of glass instead of just one, sandwiched together. The cushion of air between the two panes essentially acts as an insulator, and the separation of the two panes prevents heat from transferring through the window quite so quickly. The end result is that your home retains heat longer in the winter, and the air conditioning is more effective in the summer, potentially saving you a lot of money in the long run by running your heater and your air conditioner less often.
As a quick review, here are the questions you should ask any time you are replacing casement windows in a older home:
Will the new windows fit exactly? Be sure that the window company you are dealing with offers custom sizes, since older homes typically did not use standard sizes of windows.
What other options do I have? If you do not care for casement windows, you may want to ask if there are other options available to you, with the size and shape of ynur existing windows.
Are the new windows double paned? Double paned windows are more effective insulators than single paned windows, meaning that your house will stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. In fact, taking advantage of better insulation is one of the top reasons why homeowners of older homes replace their casement windows!
Finding perfect replacements for your casement windows in an older home isn't always easy, but it is definitely worth the trouble. Just make sure you know what to look for in replacement windows!

Gain Space with Bay Windows

It was the perfect spot. Our California ranch style house had a large picture window in the front room. The window extended from a few inches above the floor to only a few inches below the cathedral ceiling. The walls and ceiling were redwood stained knotty pine and the floor was a matching hardwood. The window looked out over a flower bed, shrubs and the expanse of front lawn. It was the perfect window to be replaced with a bay window.
The window was nearly square. It was 72 X 72 inches. We considered a bow window, but elected to install a bay window instead. We just felt that our particular house looked better with three panel bay window rather than the multiple panel bow windows. Our intent was to fill the seat board of the bay with potted plants we had sitting in front of the current picture window. The new arrangement would give us a little more space in the room and improve the overall appearance of the house. It was time to go shopping.
Scratch vs. Pre-built Bay Windows
When we first got the idea of installing the new window, I began gathering plans for building bay windows. Thumbing through books and magazines, and the Internet search engines, I found several plans for building bay, casement and garden windows from scratch. I also found that undertaking such a project was going to be unnecessary. Most of the major window manufacturers, such as Pella, Milgard and Anderson make both completely pre-assembled bay windows as well as pre-built components for replacement windows.
These days very few contractors will take on the project of building a bay or bow window from scratch. It simply isn't practical when for the same or less money they can install a high quality pre-built window. If the contractors use pre-built windows or components for new house construction or renovation projects, then we could do the same for our remodeling project, we reasoned.
Installing a bay window can easily be a do-it-yourselfer project. Before you go the diy route, however, you may want to line up a contractor to help out if necessary. This is not going to be a job that you can complete during a Saturday afternoon. Chances are you are not going to finish it in a weekend, for that matter.
You are also going to want to line up some help. Bay windows and window components are heavy. At least they are too heavy for one person to manage.
Be sure and check out the weather forecast, including the long range forecast. Installing the window means opening a hole into your home. It can take a couple of days to get the new window in place and sealed. The last thing you want is for rain to come pouring in on your floor, walls or furniture.
Be sure and check your city or community construction codes. There may be special local requirements, such as having safety glass in low profile windows. You are probably going to need a building permit anyway, so that is also a good time to check the codes.
Tools and Materials Needed
The tools you will need for this project include a tape measure, a framing square that you can also use as a straight edge, a circular saw or miter saw, crow bars, drill and bits, level, stapler, utility knife, tin snips and a caulking gun.
The materials you will need include the bay window unit, the support brackets, nails, roofing paper, shingles, roofing nails, exterior grade silicone caulking and fiberglass insulation. You will also need 1X6 inch boards for the window skirting. If you are enlarging an existing window, or if you are installing the window in a space that was previously the wall, you will also need 2X4s for cripple studs and additional framing.

Slow Downloads? Windows 7 Download - Speed Fix

If you're using Windows 7 and have found that it's downloads are extremely slow, then there's actually a reason for that which is very easy to fix. The problem with most Windows 7 computers is that they are unable to run smoothly thanks to a problem with their settings. This has affected download speeds a lot and is something a lot of people are having trouble with. Fortunately, it's actually very easy to fix and here's how...
To fix the download speeds of your PC, you need to make your system better able to find and use the settings it needs to run. Not many people know this but computers work by using a series of "settings" to help it recall everything from your username to your latest emails. These settings are used for everything on your computer, and especially the use of downloading files.
The reason why downloads run slow on Windows 7 is because of how your computer uses the settings inside the registry. Whenever your computer download a file, it is actually connecting to another PC across the Internet and transferring the file it needs. This means that if you want your PC to run as smoothly as possible, it needs to be able to read the settings and files that it has for downloading files from other computers - and the big problem is that many of those settings become corrupt and unreadable.
To fix the slow download speeds that Windows 7 has, you need to be able to fix the settings that make it run slow. And to do this, you should use a 'registry cleaner' to scan through the registry of Windows and fix the settings that are causing the download speeds of your PC to run slow. To do this, you must first download a registry tool and then let it scan through all the files on your PC. It will fix any of the damaged files that are inside your system and allow your computer to generally run faster again.
To fix download speeds for Windows 7, you should use a registry cleaner to fix all the problems that might be slowing them down inside the registry. You can Click Here to speed up Windows 7 downloads.

Windows - The Many Faces of Windows

Gone are the days when windows were universal. Gone are the days when a house would have the same window in every room. Gone are the days when your choices for windows were limited. There was a time when most common type of windows were windows whose screens where changed with the season. They are the ones when you open the window there was a either a screen to let air in or a sheet of glass for the colder months. Nowadays you have some many new options when picking out a new window.
Casement windows are becoming more common in newer homes. Casement windows are considered contemporary style windows and help bring in more light than some of your other window choices. They are side mounted on hinges and swing inward or outward with a crank. This is what makes casement windows an ideal choice to put above counters or sinks. Instead of having to push a window up, you just need to turn the crank. They can open as little or as full as your want and they are designed to capture the breezes which makes them an excellent window to keep a room well ventilated.
Along the lines of casement windows, you also have an awning window which works along the same line as a casement window. However they open upward from the bottom. Also where as casement windows are tall, awning windows are wider. They can be placed separately or above double hung windows or even doors to provide even more air circulation.
Since we are talking about double hung windows, these types of windows are more common in your older homes. They are usually divided into 2 sections and usually the lower section will slide up and down through the other one. You do find some double hung windows where the top section can slide down. When it comes to cleaning a double hung window, the more recent styles are designed so that you can release the panes and fold them downward to clean both sides. This makes cleaning a lot more practical, then cleaning one side in the house and then going outside to clean the other side.
For a more classic or country look, there are bay and bow windows. Both styles stick out from a wall which in some cases can create an extra storage or display shelf if you want. Bay windows are usually three windows combined together. The middle window normally will not open but the two windows flanking it can be either double hung or casement windows depending on your taste. Bow windows are four or more windows connected together which form a charming curve outward. The four windows can be either a combination of fixed windows or windows that open or an all the same.
There are many other choices of windows out there today, from jalousie windows, to circle windows it is almost a guarantee you will find a window that will meet your needs and your taste these days. New windows can bring a whole new look to your house and can also help you keep your house cooler during the warmer months and warmer during the cooler months.

Styles of Vinyl Replacement Windows

Replacement vinyl windows are an excellent way to add style, charm, and resale value to your home. Today's replacement windows are made in a variety of different styles, which allows you to choose the specific window type to meet your unique needs.
Single and Double Hung Windows
Probably the most popular and commonly used style of window is called a single-hung window. These traditional designs can be found in most window fixtures and most houses around the U.S.
The design of these single-hung windows is quite straight-forward, with one sash positioned over another. On single-hung windows the lower sash can slide up and down, allowing for ventilation and air-movement.
Double-hung models are very similar; however both sashes are operational, allowing you to slide the top sash down. This is beneficial because it can allow for more efficient ventilation, allowing hot air to escape the house through the upper sash, where the hot air is. Some of today's manufacturers offer their double-hung windows with the additional benefit of tilting sashes. These sashes can be tilted in to the interior of the house, allowing for easy maintenance and cleaning.
Sliders and Gliders
No, not hamburgers and aircraft. Slider-windows, sometimes called gliders by some manufacturers, are the second-most common window type. These windows have two or more sashes that slide from side to side in the frame. These windows are available with any number of sashes, and any amount of these sashes are operational. Check with your window provider to see what options they offer.
Casement Windows
Casement windows open like a door. They are hinged on one side, and usually operate with a hand crank. These cranking devices make this style of window one of the best when it comes to protection from air escape. The combination of crank and seal make casement windows superior at keeping in heat or cool air.
Picture Windows
Picture windows, sometimes referred to as fixed windows, are just that- fixed. They do not open and close. Picture windows are usually either large aesthetic features of a home, or are part of a multi-window system.
Bay/Bow Windows
Bay windows are large multi-window units. They are typically comprised of three or more windows that project out form the wall. Most commonly, they are made up of one large window in the middle, with two smaller windows flanking at 30, 45, or 90 degrees to the wall. Any angles may be used, and any number of windows can be incorporated into these window units. For example, bay units made of five windows are also common, with one large window flanked by two smaller ones on either side.
Bow windows are very similar, but have a more elliptical pattern. They, too are comprised of three or more windows, and have a radial, or bow formation.
Window Combinations
All of these window types have their own strengths. However, these windows' advantages and beauty become even greater when they are incorporated into window combinations. If wanting vinyl replacement windows, consider using window combinations to add even greater style to your home. For example, if you have a large window in your living room that needs replacing, consider replacing it with a double-hung and two casements, or a three-lite slider flanked by picture windows.
In Conclusion
Vinyl replacement windows are available in many styles to suit your specific needs and tastes. All of these styles also offer several features and options, such as grids, specialty locks, and more.

Repairing Windows Vs Replacing Windows - Deciding the Best Option is Not Always Easy

There comes a time in every window's life when it must be repaired or replaced. There are many different reasons to repair or replace windows, the trick is deciding which is the best option for you. If you are looking for more energy efficient, high performance windows, replacing will win out over repairing. Even if you need just a minor repair you should review your options and determine if replacing the window might be more beneficial than a repair in the long run. The following information weighs the options for repairing or replacing a window for two major window issues: replacing glass and replacing a window sash.
Replacing Glass
There are usually two reasons to need to replace glass. 1. The glass is broken. 2. The insulated glass seal has failed and the glass is fogging. In either case, a new piece of glass can usually be ordered and installed into the old window to fix the problem. If it is a wood window, replacing the glass will require more work, and will cost more. Vinyl or aluminum frame windows normally have a glass stop that is easily removed so the glass can be replaced. In some cases with broken glass, old windows may not be cost effective to repair and you might be better off replacing the window unit.
If the glass is fogging because the seal has failed, the entire insulated glass will need to be replaced to fix the problem. One thing to consider if the seal has failed in one window, it may not be long before other windows start to fail as well. If your windows have reached this point, you might consider replacing the windows with newer, more energy efficient windows. A new piece of glass installed in the windows can run you between $100-$300 for materials and labor. A new replacement window will cost between $300-$700 installed.
While there is a significant difference in these two prices, the window replacement will have a longer life and provide you a more energy efficient window. In addition, with the energy savings of new replacement windows, you will recoup the additional costs incurred to replace instead of repair.
Window Sash Replacement
When wood windows get older they become inefficient, drafty, and hard to operate, or the old wooden sashes begin to rot because of poor maintenance and need to be removed, even though the window frame is still in good shape. Sometimes a sash replacement can help cure this problem by inserting new sashes into the existing window frames of the house. Several manufacturers offer sash replacement kits that provide new sashes and tracks to be installed into the old window opening. The tracks are screwed into the old frames and the sashes are mounted inside the new tracks. The process provides new sashes that are in good shape and are more energy efficient than the old sashes in the opening.
While this process may save material costs (not having to pay for a brand new window), it can be a labor intensive process, which will add to the bottom line costs. In addition, this process must be done correctly or the new sash replacement kit will not function properly which could lead to future performance and weatherproofing problems.
Old wood windows can have full frame replacements without removing the old frame or interior/exterior trim using a pocket window replacement. A pocket window replacement is performed by removing the old window sashes and stops and sliding a new window inside the pocket left behind by the old window. The window is then trimmed around the edges and sealed tight to guarantee a leak free installation. The benefit to a pocket replacement, in lieu of a sash replacement kit, is that the window is manufactured and tested at the factory so you know it is airtight, watertight, and energy efficient. By sliding the new window inside the existing opening, you are letting the window manufacturer worry about it keeping out the elements.
The window sash replacement will run you about the same as what you will pay for a new window by the time you factor in installation costs etc. so it can be a wash between the two options. If you get a low price for a window sash replacement, you should make sure the installer understands the amount of work required and that installing the kits correctly is the most important thing about the project.
The Choice is Yours
Ultimately the decision to repair or replace a window is yours to make. Generally a replacement window is going to cost more than a simple repair to an existing window, but the long term benefits of a new window can surpass the benefit of just a "band aid" on an old one. There are also many more companies equipped to provide a replacement window installation than there are to perform a puality window repair. While you may save on the costs to fix a window, you might spend a lot of time trying to find the right person to perform the repair. The bottom line is this: when you are considering a window repair, you should also consider replacing the window for the long term benefits that it can provide.

How to Replace an Old Window in Your Home

A Guide to Installing a New Window in Your Home
If your old wooden window is drafty, does not open or close well, or is showing signs of water damage and decay, it is probably time to think about replacing it with a new state-of-the-art Low-E glass, vinyl clad window.
Also, if the glass pane associated with your existing old wooden window is foggy or you can feel cold drafts during the winter months emanating out from around it, or you need to hold it open during the summer months with a prop of some sort then it is definitely time to replace it.
Replacing an old window is something a Do It Yourself homeowner can tackle with some basic carpenters knowledge and a few basic carpentry tools that you probably already have in your home.
Purchasing the Proper New Window
Prior to installing a new window you first need to figure out what size window to purchase. The key parameter required when ordering a new window is its rough opening. This is specified by the window manufacturer and tells you how large of an opening you need for installing a specific window. Typically the rough opening is 1 to 2 inches taller and wider than the actual window itself.
You may need to remove the interior trim from around the old window to obtain the rough opening dimensions for your new window.
Make sure you purchase a new window that has rough opening requirements that are equal to or smaller than your measurements.
Removal of the Old Window
Once you have purchased your new window it is time to remove the old one. Using a hammer and a claw remove the old exterior trim and any nails that may be securing the window to the home. There may be a nailing flange around the perimeter of the old window. Simply use your hammer and claw to remove these nails.
With the nails removed the window should be able to be pulled out of the window frame opening.
Installation of the New Window
With the old window out, it is now time to install the new window. Before, installing the new window, make sure the rough window opening is clear of any debris and any old nails.
Place the new window into the window opening and center it within the window frame.
Use a level and a measuring tape to make sure the window is plumb and square, otherwise the window will not work properly. You may need to add some shims to plumb and square up the new window.
Oncd the window is plumb and square within the window frame, fasten it with a couple of nails. With most new windows they come with a nailing flange that makes nailing the window to the outside home exterior straightforward.
When nailing the window, start on the upper right hand side and work your way down with just a couple of nails. Check again with the level to make sure the window is level and plumb. Also take one more look on the inside of the window to make sure the window is square and centered.
If the window has remained square and plumb, go ahead and install a couple of additional nails on the other side of the window. Again, one at the top, and the other about halfway down the window.
Then go into the home and remove/cut away the retention bands that held the window square during the window installation. Slide the windows up a down and see if they operate smoothly.
If the window operates smoothly go ahead and add additional nails every 4-6 inches around the nailing flange of the window. If it does not, you may need to remove one or more of the initial nails installed and readjust the window to make sure it is plumb and square.
With the window now installed, add new trimboards around the window perimeter on both the inside and outside of the window and enjoy your new view.
